There’s no room in our family’s budget for Chanel, but I really want a new handbag for my milestone birthday. So where should I look instead? I just spent four days hosting Style Conferences in Bicester Village so I had time to do some research. Still, everything I liked of quality was still close to £750. Unfortunately for my husband, the latest TikTok phenomenon of the “Celine lookalike that costs £35 at M&S” just isn’t working for me. Ideally I would like to buy British.
And then… I spy online a much more affordable £450 handbag, brand new and personalized, by the mother of the UK handbag scene, Anya Hindmarch. I drop by the Pont Street store to check the fit and hanging of the bag, as there is no going back with customization, and because I know my husband would prefer to handle the final transaction, there therefore has a sense of surprise. The bag is there. Of course it’s not Chanel but it will be used a lot more and it’s definitely more comfortable with my personal style.
For me, a really useful bag should be as versatile as my mood. Sometimes sleek and worn with other designer items, sometimes smothered by rice cake coated fingers. Plus, there’s the assurance of customer service from Anya Hindmarch. And as long as I’m not divorcing and needing to change my initials, it’s a much more bank balance-friendly approach to “future-proof” style.
