DETROIT (FOX 2) – An Avenue of Fashion shoe store was hit twice by thieves. The owner, Kenneth Taylor, is the Shoe Doctor, located on Livernois in Detroit.
“Just like you take your clothes to the dry cleaners, you take your shoes to the dry cleaners, which is the Shoe Doctor,” he said.
Thieves stole tens of thousands of dollars worth of luxury shoes belonging to others in the shoe dry cleaning business.
Taylor has spent years building her shoe cleaning business.
“I started it in trunks or in my car because 10 years ago shoe repair shops wouldn’t accept sports shoes,” he said. “A lot of people have (seen) me starting with nothing. I’ve opened multiple locations, I even have a location in Atlanta, Georgia.”
But then, after so much success, came the recent burglaries, just days apart.
“I was actually in the hospital with pneumonia two days ago, got a call that the store was robbed,” he said. “This is supposed to be one of the nicest neighborhoods in Detroit, Michigan.
“We had planned to reopen, but then we suffered another burglary.”
The second burglary happened late Thursday evening – until Friday morning.
“And they pretty much stole all the shoes last night,” Taylor said.
The shoe doctor is now trying to find money to pay his customers for their stolen shoes.
He has insurance, but it will take time for the insurance company to approve the claim.
In the meantime, he received a few words of encouragement from a loyal customer.
“Keep going, keep going,” said Daylan Banks. “Don’t let that stop you.”
