WARE, England — This is Xavier McKinney’s first time to England and he wasn’t going to spend what little free time he had locked away in his hotel room. He wasn’t going to explore the rural area the Giants are staying in. McKinney had the big city in his sights and had to fight sleep and head for London.
“I don’t even know what’s out there,” McKinney said Friday. “But I know there’s a lot of fashion, so that’s my path. I’m going to be wherever there’s clothes – that’s where I’m going to be.”
It was a fairly weary group of Giants travelers when their charter team landed at Heathrow Airport around 7am on Friday. They settled into the Hanbury Manor Hotel and Country Club – located about an hour north of London – quickly settled in and then headed out onto the pitch for training without adjusting to the five-hour time difference first.
“Yeah, I’m tired,” said Daniel Jones. “We are all quite tired. We have some time to rest.
It’s Jones’ first time in Europe, but he said he won’t venture to London until the Giants travel there to face the Packers on Sunday, preferring to stay closer to home. team hotel. Defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence was heading to London for dinner and shopping, but only after “not too long of a siesta”.
Head coach Brian Daboll scheduled a light practice shortly after the team arrived at the hotel, making sure no one was too comfortable in their room. A full-size football pitch, nestled in rolling hills, sat at the base of a small hill, creating an idyllic setting for the Giants to work off their fatigue.
“It was kind of peaceful, in a way,” Lawrence said. “It’s just open to a whole bunch of fields, a little pond there. We did a few laps. It was just peaceful. Get a little stretch. Almost like we were about to do yoga or something. It was good.”
McKinney said “it was like we were in a movie” looking at the scenery surrounding the field of lush green grass.
“Everything looks super nice,” he said. “Everything looks clean. It’s fun. Obviously, I’ve never been here, so I’m pretty excited. I know a lot of guys are too. A lot of guys haven’t been here, so I’m pretty excited. is the first time they come here.
Jones seemed a bit drawn to playing overseas.
“I think it’s a cool experience just to think we’re in London playing a game of football,” he said. “You go down the hill, and there’s pasture, there’s a golf course, and all of a sudden you see a football pitch. It was pretty cool. It’s a cool pitch that they have settled here at the hotel. It’s a cool experience. We’re all excited to be here.
