Declo students have fun with fashion past before prom

DECLO, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — With prom week often comes glitz, glamor and maybe even a touch of glitz; but this week at Declo High School, students are also getting a history lesson.

Pam Young, a United States History teacher at Declo High School, brought a variety of prom dresses that span decades to help her students visualize the prom of the past.

“We start with my mother’s dress in the 40s, then my sister’s dresses in the 60s, then mine, then my younger sister in the 80s, then our daughters, so we went through the generations” , Young said. .

Young said the students enjoyed the exhibit, and perhaps surprisingly, the consensus favorite dresses were from the 1970s.

“I like the classier look, a lot less skin and a lot less glitz and glam,” said Declo High School Grade 11 student Kaylee Bowles.

Young said part of her role as a teacher of United States history is to help her students better connect with what they’re learning, which is why she implements real-world exhibits. like this one.

“It’s bigger than a textbook and bigger than any course limit,” Young said. “There’s a whole world there and they get such a small slice, so it’s good for them.”
