Cocktail with the winners of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund 2022

Following Monday’s CFDA Awards, which saw many daring names dressed to perfection and winning their accolades, the CFDA, vogue, and Saks proved they weren’t done celebrating emerging American fashion. Thursday evening, in the warm wood-panelled bar-chalet of L’Avenue at Saks, many designers met. It was an opportunity to warm up before the start of the holiday season as well as a brief moment to decompress.

The night hosted the finalists for this year’s Class of 2022 CFDA/vogue fashion fund; Jacques Agbobly from Black Boy Knits, Felisha Noel from Fe Noel, Lauren Harwell Godfrey from Harwell Godfrey, Taofeek Abijako from Head of State, Conley Averett from Judy Turner, Colm Dillane from Kidsuper, Pia Davis and Autumn Randolph from No Sesso, Omar Salam de Sukeina, Jackson Wiederhoeft de Wiederhoeft and Elena Velez, who won the CFDA Emerging Designer Award.

“We are here to celebrate the next generation of American designers. Take advantage of this evening to connect with each other, vogue team, the CFDA team, and you can also ask us some of those uncomfortable retail questions,” Saks Fifth Avenue fashion director Roopal Patel told revelers alongside her colleagues, including the director of merchandising, Tracy Margolis.

“I feel drained but validated, and it makes all the stress and hustle and bustle totally worth it,” Velez told us, joined by her husband and two children, who enjoyed the restaurant’s many luxurious snacks. . I am now trying to locate resources, funding and the human element, and I hope this recognition will make this process a little easier so that I can continue to serve as a pipeline to industry for many other collaborators including I really believe, like Morph Design Studio in Chicago; Nelson Kies from Milwaukee Wisconsin (where I’m from); every welder, machinist, and fabricator in the Midwest; all my friends from Gallas Metalworks. It’s very much the heart of the brand, so I come [to New York] as a professional outlet for what I do, and then I go home to really build brand authenticity.

Stephen Kolb, who was playing matchmaker in the crowd, could be seen connecting the dots between the buyers, vogue editors and designers in hopes of nurturing the next chapter of the list of names that have emerged from the fund over the past decade, including Thom Browne, Telfar, Proenza Schouler, Aurora James and Joseph Altuzarra. “I woke up the next morning and felt very proud,” Kolb said. vogue on Monday Night’s Awards. “I know what we’ve done to get the industry to think differently, and it was evident Monday night that we’ve started to accomplish that.”

With the Q4 retail sprint and Q1 planning meetings looming for many in the coming weeks, everyone would soon be back to reality, but in the meantime, a glass or two of bubbles and a few Miniature burgers were exactly what the doctor ordered. “Monday I felt like a princess, today I’m a designer; the glass slipper has fallen,” jokes Jacques Agbobly. “I’m so grateful to be here and to have this celebration to cap off the last six months of incredible opportunity, mentorship and support from people who just want to see you do great things.”
