Bring dirty shoes back to life

If you’ve been spending money in the past few months, you’ve noticed price increases on everything from gas to groceries and everything in between. The cost of certain products, such as sneakers, can increase rapidly, so we strive to make the most of them. When they get ruined, you don’t want to just throw them away, but there’s a place in Detroit that can show you how to clean them and bring your sneakers back to life.

Kenneth Taylor, owner of Shoe Doctor Sneaker Laundry, joined Tati Amare on “Live in the D” to share more details.

Taylor started nine years ago in his basement. “I’m a sneakerhead,” Taylor said. “I had 50 pairs of dirty shoes in my basement, and 10 years ago local repair shops weren’t fixing athletic shoes.”

Since the cobblers refused to clean them, he started his own business.

The Shoe Doctor has shared some tips on how to care for your sneakers at home. First, he says, fill a bowl with water, add dish soap and scrub it with a sponge. Then wipe it off with a towel. If you have scuff marks on your sneakers, he recommends rubbing them down with alcohol on a rag.

If you have sneakers with complex materials, he recommends bringing them to his shop as you may experience complications such as color bleeding.

Taylor’s company finished second in a competition this year and won $100,000 on Revolt TV’s “Bet on Black.” Target sponsored the contest, which was created to help the black community. The competition determined which small black businesses had the most impact on the community.

“As you can see, you have to put two shoes on your feet every day,” Taylor said.

The Shoe Doctor Sneaker Laundry has two locations in Michigan: one in Detroit at 18701 Livernois and one in Roseville at 19351 E 10 Mile. There is also a store near the Lenox Mall in Atlanta, Georgia.
